Geocache Description:

Over 200 inches of rain or about 100 billion gallons, fall every year over the El Yunque, so now you have an idea of why this is a tropical rain forest. There are several trails around but one of the unique waterfall accesible for a good dip is La Mina with 35 foot waterfall. This is one of the most popular hikes in the rain forest along with Big Tree Trail and for those braves ready to enjoy a very cold water, this is the perfect place to visit. The trail to La Mina from the parking is approximately 0.7 miles in length with a drop in elevation from 2100ft to 1640ft and should take you an average of 30-40 minutes (one way). The trail is rated "challenging" in difficulty by the US Forest Services, with a narrow path and a series of steps along the trail.

Make sure to wear comfortable footwear suitable for trail walking (trainers, sneakers, walking sandals) and be careful along the way as the path can be slippery when wet, and normally is wet, remember, this is a rain forest. The most difficult part of this trail is when you have to returned back to your parking area. To go to the waterfall you will be going down, but for you returned back, you have to go up most of the time. Im sure you will love the experience so I encorage you to go and get this cache. Last time I discovered that before arriving La Mina waterfall, there are several pond areas with calm water that for sure will complete your experience on this forest.

High probability there is no mobile coverage on this area, so be sure to bring your gps with you (and the hint)

NOTE:

Here is my advice and my personal opinion: if you want to go to the Yunque’s most spectacular sites and have 3-5 hours to spare, this is the order of the caches you should follow: Portal (GC3G44K), La Coca Falls (GC39PW7), Yokahu Tower (GC39PWZ), Mt. Britton (GC3G466), Los Picachos (GC3G484), The Peak (GC3G48KJ) , On The Top of the Yunque (GC33C05), The Rock (GC2VD3Y) Baño Grande (GC3G492), El Yunque Earth Cache (GC5C51Q), Take a Break on the Trails (GC43GH5), La Mina- Yunque Waterfall (GC5CG3A), and Luquillo Far Far Away (GC4RPAX),

.

If you don’t have time and just want to do the “easier ones” then this is the order: Portal (GC3G44K), La Coca (GC39PW7), Yokahu (GC39PWZ), Baño Grande (GC3G492) El Yunque Earth Cache (GC5C51Q), Take a Break on the Trails (GC43GH5), La Mina- Yunque Waterfall (GC5CG3A), and Luquillo Far Far Away (GC4RPAX)
