Geocache Description:

A small series of caches at locations used for the filming of one of my favourite movies; The Wicker Man. This classic of British Horror used many stunning locations through Dumfries and Galloway, as well as Plockton and Skye further north.

THE WICKER MAN - A missing child is always trouble.

The opening sequence of the cinema-released version of the film (learn more about it here) sees Sergeant Howie landing his seaplane at Summerisle - actually Plockton. This cache brings you to a location looking over the loch to the Harbour Masters house and the village as it appears in the opening scenes of the film.

To reach the cache by car follow signs for Duncraig railway station, pass the castle (yes, really!) and take the lower road when it splits. Park up and walk the few yards/metres back to the junction. Then follow your arrow over the bridge. I suggest you visit Plockton too as it's a great place to explore in a responsible fashion. The Harbour Master's house, main street and causeway all feature in the movie.

To reach the cache by camper van or larger vehicle I suggest you park in Plockton and walk back out of 'town', past the war memorial and fascinating open-air church, to the start of the marked footpath (parking for one car?) - see the waypoint. Then follow that path to the cache; it's a lovely walk above the lochside of about a mile/1,600m. When returning to the village, a look around the corner at the castle is recommended.

Other locations used for filming:
Gatehouse of Fleet - The Green Man pub (exterior) - actually estate offices near The Mason's Arms.
Creetown - The Green Man pub (interior) - Actually the bar of the Ellangowan Hotel
Kirkcudbright - May Morrison's shop and the hobbyhorse chase scene - Now an art gallery/shop near the police office.
Whithorn - The "We carry death out of the village" and library scenes - The library, built in 1911, is on the main road.
Castle Kennedy - The 'jumping over the fire' dance and the procession scenes towards the end of the film - No standing stones and £4 per adult entrance. Near GC51RAJ
The Old Man of Storr on Skye - Opening credits as Howie flys over them - home to my The Wicker Man - Corn Rigs and Barley Rigs cache.
Anwoth Old Kirk - The graveyard and school scenes - home to my The Wicker Man - Here Lieth Beech Buchanan cache.
St.Ninian's Cave & Burrow Head - final scenes of the film - home to my The Wicker Man - Our more dreadful sacrifice cache.
Cluzean Castle - exterior (and one internal) scenes of Lord Summerisle's home.
Port Logan - used as Lord Summerisle's gardens.

Sadly my father died a few days before I set this cache. As he loved the film too, this cache is dedicated to the memory of Mike Smith. 1940-2005.
