Current Goal

A while back, IGO member Blue Deuce donated a Groundspeak Volunteer Geocoin to the IGO and suggested that it be used as reward for people who put in extra effort for the good of the IGO or geocaching in Iowa.

About This Item

The following are some guidelines that will be used to determine who will be invited to log the coin:

 • People who participate in an IGO sponsored CITO event.
 • The person or people who lead the planning efforts for one of IGOs large annual events. At present, these are Hike N Seek and Cache Bash.
 • People who are very active in organizing, running and improving the IGO. This could include past and present board members and people who donate significant time or resources to the group.
 • People who put in extra effort to get geocaching accepted in a previously off-limits area. This could include folks who give presentations to town councils or park directors.
 • People who actively promote geocaching/IGO by talking to the media, teaching classes and otherwise exposing non-cachers.
 • People who keep geocaching alive and well by placing a higher-than-average number of high-quality caches.

In short, we are looking for people who take the lead in improving geocaching, the image of geocaching, or the relationships geocachers have with others.

Since this is intended to be a reward, only the "best of the best" will be invited. In addition to the high standards, the coin will be awarded no more than 4 times per year. Once a person has been awarded the coin, that person will not be eligible again for a period of one year. We hope that these limits will make logging this coin something special and will challenge people to give more to the geocaching community.

Cachers can be nominated at any time by sending an email to "iowageocacherspresident@gmail.com" with a few words about what the nominee has done to earn the coin. Nominations will be considered by the IGO board of directors and possibly other geocachers. Please put "Extra Effort Geocoin Nomination" in the subject line of the email. An invitation to log the coin will be awarded to the nominee who is chosen as having done the most to further the IGO and/or geocaching.

I was surprised, a bit bewildered, and truly humbled to receive this wonderful volunteer geocoin recognition from the IGO. 😮😛 Working with Eastern Iowa's museum directors to create and implement the QC Museum Series was a very fun and very rewarding experience.🙂 That series has and is receiving quite a few visitors and favorite points... including whole families and out-of-town and out-of-country travelers. The same rewarding feelings were felt when working with the Bur Oak Land Trust to implement geocaches in the Pappy Dickens and Big Grove preserves. 👍 We've also helped with numerous IGO CITO events and other IGO-related events.😉 I suppose the 320 caches Joyce and I have implemented and maintain to keep them up and running is also something for which IGO has taken notice. 🙂 It's fantastic to receive peer acknowledgment for actions you truly enjoy doing!😌 Thanks so very much IGO board for this great recognition! 🙂👍

Thank you for this wonderful honor. It was in recognition for the work of our group, The "G" Men, in organizing and hosting the 2015 Hike-n-Seek weekend in Dubuque county. Our group included:
BIGBROTHERBEAR, 24hawki, geojenkins, fatfuzz, a1bob66, ptcline, Sawboy, Taw, Rayven1972, Aceey, cneumann98, and EmmJay1728. Without their insight, inspiration, dedication, patience, and effort, none of this would've happened. I know I speak for all when I say, thank you.

As part of the organizing crew for the 2014 IGO Hide and Seek Okaboji Cache Fishing event it is our honor to log this trackable. After a rough start a great bunch of local cachers came together and made this event happen. We hope we created many memories for those who visited and hope to see them them soon on the trail. Good health to all. Moviecatz

We received this coin from the IGO during the IGO People's Choice Awards 2014. When we first started geocaching I saw no reason to meet or get involved with other cachers. Twila saw things differently. As time moved on we have developed a lot of very close friends and we got more involved in events. On the night of the awards, the last thing I expected was to receive this honor from our peers. It is amazing to be honored for doing something you enjoy. Gary

We were both amazed. I was reduced to tears. Those who know me, know how emotional I can be.
We have worked hard over the years to promote geocaching and doing it "right" almost from the get go. Our first venture as fairly newbies, was to conduct a 101 class at Pioneer Ridge Conservation Area for a group of Home School kids. And that was the beginning. We have conducted several informational meetings since. We worked with our group WACkOSAGO to host two fairly major events every year. It is our joy and our privilege to be involved with IGO and Geocaching since 2005.
Thank you IGO for this award. It means so much. Twila

We were so pleasantly surprized to receive this honor at Winter Picnic 7. Looking at past logs, we are joining a group of very active cachers who keep the IGO going. When we started our Winter Picnic it was intended to give cachers a fun event in the winter. It has been fun to watch it grow. We have met so many wonderful people through geocaching. We've also been pleased to meld our glass fusing hobby with awards for events & people who have contributed so much to geocaching. Thanks so much for this honor.

“WOW” seems to be a common opening in the logs posted here, and I can’t think of a better way to describe my experience in having possession of this coin – so here goes…..:

WOW!! 😮 I don’t think anyone would dispute that was my totally speechless response to receiving this coin and award at the IGO Annual Members Meeting that kicked off Hike n Seek 2013. I’m still searching for words that would properly describe my appreciation for this very special honor…..🤭

I really was totally caught off guard when our IGO President called out my name as the newest recipient of this very distinctive award. Flabbergasted❔ Yes. Stunned❔ Yes. Surprised❔ If you were there, you know the answer is “YES”!! 😉

One thing I can say at this point is, I will treasure this special honor for the rest of my life. 👍 I chose to accept a position on the IGO Board because of every single one of it’s members….a geo-family that I gained when I discovered this wonderful sport of geocaching. I’ve crossed paths with many of you in the last 4+ years and I’ve learned that geocachers are truly special people, and the best people I’ve ever encountered in my days on this planet. Our geocaching “family” is a unique and closely bonded group of people, and I am blessed to call all of you “friend”. And when it comes to my friends, I have always had the attitude to bend over backwards for YOU. Being a part of this organization and doing what I can is easy and enjoyable for me, because I’m just helping my FRIENDS. 😎

I am truly humbled to receive this honor, and thank each and every one of you for this cherished memory of a lifetime. 😛

[red]…WOW!![/red] 😮🤭😉

WOW!! I was truly blown away when I was handed this coin at The IGO People's Choice Awards at Honey Creek Resort on April 20, 2012.

Several months ago CJandBJJones (Curt and Brenda) and Digger9 (Jim and Michelle) were approached about a weekend of events at Honey Creek Resort. Hill Folk thought we should throw together a little awards program. Well we started talking about what we wanted to do, and came up with the People's Choice theme. We started pounding the pavement and pushing interest in the IGO. Send us your nominations, visit the website and so on. Now we had a list of nominees, back to the pavement, VOTE VOTE VOTE, go online and vote on the IGO website. By the time voting concluded, the peoples choice was probably for us the be quiet.

We had a great time with the awards show.

When the coin was handed to me, our President, BJCheryl (onezee), said that it was for stepping up and accepting the role of Vice President in the absence and departure of the current VP Bumanfam. I was glad to step in and take that role. It is great to work with such a wonderful group (BJCheryl, Hill Folk, 24Hawki,cjandbjjones, Repmul, c-dog, ccwelch, and Iowapete), the current board of directors.

I am truly honored to accept the coin.

On behalf of Michelle and myself,
THANK YOU

Wow! I became the first three-time award honoree of the IGO Extra Effort geocoin. I will be honest with you guys it is NOT a lot of "work". I am simply doing a hobby that I love to do. I was awarded the coin this time at the 2012 Annual Member Meeting in Winterset, Iowa. My good friend, Bumanfam, awarded me this honor. Thank you very much, Richard. You, too, do so much for Iowa geocaching.

I was looking at IGO events that we have held. (40 as of 03/13/13) I have directed 6 of them or 15%. That's pretty good.

HNS12
Bucky's (My brainchild just like the 24 HnS format) 2012 - Tursi's in Des Moines
HNS08
IGO Camping III 2008
Chichaqua Cache Bash 2008
IGO Camping II 2007 (Part of Trail Daze) was awarded my first IGO coin there.

Plan on doing many, many more.

See you all on the trail!
