A simple 3-stage multi providing a nice tour of the Gullion Lime
Quarry in Chelmsford. All stages of this multi-cache are very close
to the trails (i.e. no bushwhacking required). Stages 1 and 2 are
micros and both are in plain sight (when viewed at the proper
angle), and both are just a few feet from the trail, so there's no
need to disrupt anything while searching for them. The final is an
ammo can. The entire hike is about 1.25 miles.
The Lime Quarry trails are open from
dawn to dusk. No night caching please.
The posted coordinates above are for stage 1. Parking coordinates
are listed below in the "Additional Waypoints" section.
For the most direct route to stage 1
take the trail to the left of the kiosk.
An encrypted hint for stage 1 is provided below in the "Additional
Hints" section. Stage 1 contains an encrypted hint for stage 2 and
stage 2 contains an encrypted hint for the final (so bring your
secret rot-13 decoder ring just in case).
Please take care to replace the
containers (and any necessary camo) exactly as you found
them.
This is the first geocache monitored by the Chelmsford
Open Space Stewardship (C.O.S.S.) program. During recent months
the Stewards have worked hard to improve the trail system at the
Lime Quarry Reservation (as well as other open spaces that C.O.S.S.
is responsible for). As part of this program the Stewards plan to
check up on monitored caches whenever they walk their trails (which
is about twice per week).
Here's a bit of history of the lime quarry (from the Chelmsford
Conservation Commission website):
The Lime Quarry Reservation was acquired in 1967 as a 26-acre
parcel and expanded in 1976 with the addition of 40 additional
acres. Both purchases were made possible with Commonwealth of
Massachusetts Self-Help funding. The 64-acre parcel lies between
Littleton Road (Route 110) and 1-495. This site is the former
location of lime quarries and kilns dating back as far as 1736. The
quarries operated until 1830 and were a major source of lime for
plaster for homes in Chelmsford and Lowell. The area, due to its
unique geology, supports a number of locally uncommon plants, which
are only found in areas of high PH, as exist in limestone.
Many thanks to Eight Foot
Llama and g-o-cashers for helping put this cache
together!
