The Celtic Wall (Yorkshire Dales) Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Dalesman: This cache has been in need of care and maintenance for some time and as the owner has not responded to my note I am archiving it.

Guidelines:**You are responsible for occasional visits to your cache to maintain proper working order, especially when someone reports a problem with the cache (missing, damaged, wet, etc.). You may temporarily disable your cache to let others know not to search for it until you have a chance to fix the problem. This feature is to allow you a reasonable amount of time - normally a few weeks - in which to check on your cache. If a cache is not being maintained, or has been temporarily disabled for an unreasonable length of time, we may archive the listing.**

If you wish to contact me about this cache please use my Email address below my signature and quote the GC number of the cache. Please note this system is not infallible and I may miss any such mail.

Many thanks,

Geocache Description:

PLEASE DO NOT CLIMB ON THE WALL OR MOVE ANY STONES ON THIS ANCIENT SITE. The wall is very well preserved for its age, let’s help keep it that way.

This feature is incorrectly shown as an “enclosure” on the OS map. It is in fact a strong linear wall, much wider and much better built than the usual local dry stone walls or sheep shelters.

According to A Wainwright’s “Walks in the Limestone Country” it was at first thought to be a defensive shield for an ancient encampment in the valley below, but is more likely a burial place. Due to its age local historians have named it the “Celtic Wall”.

The cache is located close to one of the two sections of the wall, I would recommend a stroll across both to appreciate it properly. Watch your step on the clints and grykes of the limestone pavement.

You could get to the cache from various directions, perhaps from Feizor or the free parking area at Buck Haw Brow below Giggleswick scar : N 54 05 276 W 002 18 716
