Thornsbury Bailey Brown, a Taylor County native, was the first Union soldier to lose his life during the American Civil War. Private Brown was shot and killed by a sniper on May 22, 1861, on the west side of Grafton, WV. Before becoming a member of Company B, 2nd Virginia (Re-stored) Infantry, Private Brown was a part of Captain George R. Lotham’s “Grafton Guards.” A monument to his memory stands on the spot where his life was taken in what is locally known as "Fetterman."
Stage 1 – The coordinates listed above will take you to this monument for Stage 1. To get the coordinates for Stage 2, you need the date that is found on line 10 of the monument. Take the month and the day that appears on line 10 (i.e. February 14 would be 214) and subtract 302 for “A”. Take the year that appears on line 10 and subtract 1111 for “B”. The coordinates for Stage 2 are as follows:

Stage 2 – This location is the final resting place of Private Brown. Please note that the hours of operation are from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. To get the coordinates for Stage 3, you first need the Grave Location number and subtract 374 for “C”. Take the year that appears on line 4 of the obelisk monument and subtract 1486 for “D”. The coordinates for Stage 3 are as follows:

Stage 3 – You will return to the Fetterman area for the final stage. There is adequate parking across the road from the cache. The cache is a camouflaged lock-n-lock box. It contains a log, several trinkets, and a FTF prize in a marked envelope. Good luck!
