Geocache Description:

The above Co-ordinates will take you to the first of two hidden micros that will lead you to the main cache. It is a circular walk, of approx 2 ½ - 3 miles. It is possible to cycle this route but the by- way does get very wet and muddy in winter and, for the same reason, this section is not recommended for push-chairs (although in summer it may be possible). When we set the cache parts of the by-way were flooded and only ‘just’ passable. Apart from one part, where care needs to be taken when walking along a country lane, it is safe for children – as long as they have the stamina for a long walk!

Limited parking can be found along St George’s Road. Proceed to the end of St George’s Road, past the speed bumps and, on the left-hand side of the road, you will see the former workhouse for the region.

Erected, in 1838 to designs by HE Kendall this workhouse was based on the Poor Law Commissioners standard cruciform plan. Melksham Union was renamed Trowbridge and and Melksham in 1898 and in 1930 the workhouse became Trowbridge Public Assistance Institution. From 1948 until 1988 it was known as St George’s Hospital and provided care for the elderly infirm and those with a mental illness. The site was redeveloped for housing in 2003 and is now luxury flats. More information on the workhouse can be found on www.workhouse.org.uk.

Start walking along the bi-way to find the first micro, do not be tempted to drive down there are no turning places.

The first micro will give you the coordinates for the second micro. To reach this carry on in the same direction to the end of the by-way. When you reach the second micro if you fancy an even longer walk before you start off for the main cache you could, at this point, incorporate another nearby cache belonging to Gowenhouse - “Church of St Mary the Virgin GCKH29”, then return to this point.

The second micro will give you the coordinates for the main cache.

Now on to the main cache. - This entails a lovely walk along the Kennett and Avon Canal. It is a large plastic container ( Room for TB’s and swaps) and hidden inside a camouflage bag. The first to find can retrieve the FTF Pin badge as their prize.

As stated this is a circular walk so if you need to return to your car, when you have found the main cache, it may be helpful to use the co-ordinates for the first micro to give you the shortest route. Alternatively carry on along the canal path to the next exit point (by locks and bridge) and follow the road to the right, go past the pub and village hall and continue to walk straight, following the road, until you reach St George’s Road on your right. OR - you may wish to do other caches in the area that are VERY close by. For example the cache belonging to Gowenhouse - “Semington Aqueduct GCK9ZE” or another of ours “Disney Goes Hunting.”.

Useful information: The pub ‘Somerset Arms’ is a good place for family meals or to have a well earned drink! There is also a small playground for the children located at Wessex Close, just past the village school, at N51 20.584 W002 09.157.
