Geocache Description:

This cache is located near the village of Borthwick. The co-ordinates take you to a parking area outside both Borthwick Parish Church and Borthwick Castle Hotel. Whilst the cache is not located in this immediate area, it’s worth having a wander around the locale. We particularly liked the church gates / memorial - the painted wrought ironwork was lovely.

The 5th cache placed by Team Bostik, you will find the answers to Q1 to 3 insitu, the others require some prior research. Hopefully you will then calculate the co-ordinates of the cache location. Please note where the answers are letters these should be converted by the usual application of A=1, B=2 ......

Why are we setting this cache here? Well, principally because Borthwick is our family name (not Bostik!!). This led to the genealogy angle - I’ve been threatening to do our family tree for long enough and have previously done some very basic research on our family name. Don’t know too much but the title Lord Borthwick was created in 1452 and William de Borthwick is a name that features many times during the years…at least me and my Dad are just plain William!!

I can’t help feeling there’s some mileage in this Geocaching / Genealogy cross-over. How about using that Clan Map of Scotland that everyone has ( the one with the names of the Clans on the coloured-up lands and the heraldic shields around the perimeter) and placing a cache, giving a very brief history, for each surname shown …?? The name of BORTHWICK appears only South of Edinburgh around the Borthwick Castle locale (we’ve got this Clan Map as a jigsaw as well!! ) - see below

So here it is…nothing personal, but we, Team Bostik, must be connected to these places / people somewhere down the line!!!
