Geocache Description:

DLITMI07 is a small cache located on Moreton Island.

The Ngugi Tribe had Moreton Island as their home many years ago. Although Lieutenant Cook was aware of Cape Moreton and Moreton Bay it was Matthew Flinders in 1799, who discovered that the cape was actually part of an island. He then named the island using the incorrect spelling found in one of Cook's journals!

Moreton Island has had many roles since its role as home to the Ngugi tribe. It has been a safe place for shipwrecked sailors, a warning light to passing ships, a defence post during WW2, Queensland's only whaling station and what it is today; a holiday destination for people wanting a natural, unspoilt haven.

DLITMI07 was placed by THENANKS on one of our regular camping holidays on Moreton Island. The cache is at an elevation of about 75m and the walk is about 250m from the 4WD track. It is up on "Five Hills" lookout overlooking Heath Island and the tidal lagoons which are popular habitats for wading birds.

We hope your time on Moreton is great. Enjoy the cache hunt too!
