The new name for this cache is "DERAILED - The Displaced WB&E Cache". Originally it was called "WB&E Trail - Tannersville Station" and was part of the series along the old WB&E railroad grade in Tannersville. Unfortunately, that cache never made it to the approval stage - so it was moved to this new location - see the cache history below. This is a RAILROAD THEMED CACHE. PLEASE READ THIS CACHE DESCRIPTION COMPLETELY BEFORE ATTEMPTING THIS CACHE.
This cache is located on a 123-acre piece of property owned by Stroud Township. The parking area is located off of Hallet Road in Stroud Township. Actually, it's the same parking area that you might use if you are going to "Nightmare in the Woods" (GCZRAW); "Cache Me If You CAN" (GCPH8P) and the "Stonecrusher Cache" (GCKJ9K). (And as mentioned in the Stonecrusher description, ignore any No Trespassing signs you see at the parking site - they are still left over from the previous owner of the property.) Park at N 41° 02.473’ / W 075° 13.429’. The entrance is a grassy cut-thru between the trees (right before the curve in the road). You can park under the trees or keep driving about 100-200 feet and park in the open (tall grass) near the pond.
To get to the trail... Walk through the tall grass towards the creek. (Don't walk up the hill under the power lines).
Cross the creek (suggest you wear waterproof boots) and you'll see an old woods road. Parts of the trail are rocky and there are some downed trees which you must climb over.
HOW TO GET TO THIS CACHE: This cache is located at the highest point on the property - at approximately 869 feet elevation. I'm not sure if there is a trail that goes to the top of the hill. I took the trail to the "Nightmare in the Woods" cache, and then bushwacked the 0.15 miles up the steep hill. I did find a trail along the top near the scenic view overlook, and followed that, but that soon disappeared and wasn't going in the right direction. There might be a better or easier way to get up there - but be prepared to do some bushwacking through the trees and bushes to the top of the hill. If you have extra time, you can explore the area and you might find some other trails. Because of the rocky terrain, I'd suggest you do this cache during daylight hours. When you're at the cache location, enjoy the scenic view at the top.
The cache container is an ammo box and should be relatively easy to find. The contents of the container are all RAILROAD THEMED items. There is a camera in the container, please take a picture of your geocaching group or yourself. Thanks and enjoy the hike.
Walking distance from the parking area to the cache is about 0.50 miles one-way (or it could be more depending upon your approach) and includes a steep climb at the end. Recommend you look at the online topo-map of the area.
NOTE: Depending upon the weather and the rainfall, the creek might be anything from a small trickle of water to a very swift running stream. Please use caution and have fun.
As of 1/5/07, the recent rains have made the creek flow pretty swiftly - and the rocks I usually use to cross were covered by water. Use caution.
CACHE HISTORY: This cache, originally called "WB&E Trail - Tannersville Station" was originally placed near the site of the old WB&E Tannersville RR Station (in Big Pocono State Park) on the eastern side of Camelback Mountain in mid-February 2006. If you're interested in seeing where the old RR Station was located, take a hike on the trail towards "WB&E Trail - End of the Line". The RR Station was located in a large cleared area about 1-1/4 miles from the trailhead at Riday Gate. Unfortunately nothing is left of the building. After DCNR did not approve the location because of a rare plant species (Pennsylvania Sand Cherry), I moved the cache to another location, but still no good. I ended up moving the cache 4 times, each time it was not approved by DCNR because of environmental impacts to the area. Not wanting to totally scrap the cache, I decided it best to move the cache completely out of the area. So after 10-1/2 months of sitting on top of Camelback Mountain, the cache has a new home about 5 miles east of it's original location. Since this was to be a railroad themed cache, I picked this new location, because 0.2 miles to the northeast of the cache location are the remnants of the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western RR's Analomink Railroad Station. The Analomink RR Station is gone, but parts of the concrete foundation remain as well as a nearby signal tower and even a benchmark (LY1134). The railroad tracks are to the east on the other side of the river along Routes 191/447, and the tracks are still used by the occaisional freight trains that come through the area.
