Dead Man’s Hill reaches a high point of 1,257 feet, earned its name
during the logging era at the turn of the century. The steep hills
made the area a treacherous place to log and several fatal
accidents occurred. The last known and most remembered was in 1910.
“Big Sam” Graczyk, a twenty-one year old lumberjack, soon to be
married, was killed while driving a team of horses and a big wheel
of logs down a steep slope near here. Consequently, the name for
the ridge stuck.
