INDIANA SPIRIT QUEST #551

"Seceder Cemetery"

This quest will bring you to Seceder Cemetery in Wabash Township of Parke County near Portland Mills.  This is a very old cemetery that contains graves dating back to the early 1800's.  The cemetery is somewhat sectioned off with the older part of the cemetery known as Seceder Cemetery and the newer part known as Portland Mills Cemetery.  I didn't spend much time in the newer section but I did observe several World War II markers.

From the records I could find on the cemetery there appears to be 42 veterans from 7 different wars buried in this cemetery; 2 veterans from the Revolutionary War, 1 veteran from the War of 1812, 23 veterans from the Civil War, 1 veteran from the Mexican-American War, 3 veterans from WW I, 10 veterans from WW II, and 2 veterans from the Vietnam War.

Here are some of the markers located in the cemetery:

Revolutionary War Veteran
John Burnside
N 39° 47.159' W 087° 01.241'

Revolutionary War Veteran
Samusl Hazlett
N 39° 47.156' W 087° 01.256'

War of 1812 Veteran
Samuel R. Hamilton
