The Old Barn - Wodehouse Creek #4 Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

valleyone: Geowalk was right. I went by today to check, and the beautiful old barn foundation is indeed gone. The cache is missing, presumably buried, bulldozed or otherwise destroyed. So I'm going to archive this one and explore the area in the spring to develop a new cache.

Geocache Description:

This cache rests beside an old barn foundation a few metres away from Wodehouse Creek, on conservation lands in the middle of Grey County.

Wodehouse Creek is one of the most interesting creeks in Ontario, rising from springs in the highlands of Grey Country, but flowing only a few miles before disappearing into the limestone bedrock - one of our best known 'disappearing streams'.

This is the first of several caches I intend to put out over the next few months, to tell the story of Wodehouse Creek. It grows quickly from its origin in local springs, fed by the huge wetlands it flows through. Within only a few miles it's a good-sized stream, 20 feet wide and several feet deep (and a roaring torrent in the spring).

But then it suddenly starts losing much of its flow to cracks in the bedrock, and reduces in size to a small stream a few feet wide, and a few inches deep. This flows about another mile until it hits a cul-de-sac in the limestone bedrock, where it forms a pool that is disappearing beneath your feet.

The stream emerges in three major springs below the Niagara Escarpment, but that's another story, better left for a future cache.

This one is an easy start, only a short distance off the road, though you might have to look a bit. It's in a favourite spot of mine, where I regularly stopped to watch birds while volunteering for the Ontario Breeding Bird Atlas. Enjoy the view of the wetland, and if you're there in spring or summer, the birds you might see or hear - you might even hear a bittern's totally wierd call, "galumpf galumpf".

Parking at N44 24.787/W080 36.015. TH coffee on me for FTF! Watch for more caches in this series in the future.
