HUSTLER

Settled: early 1870's

Origin of Name: The post office sent a list of names to the community in order to let the villagers choose one. Hustler was not on the list and the villagers inserted it themselves and the post office accepted the name.

A Brief History of Hustler, Wi
As soon as the Omaha Railroad built from Camp Douglas through Hustler, which was in the 1870's, Hustler came into being. To begin with the only building was a freight platform and a railroad siding. The village was platted in 1894. It was incorporated November 14, 1913
On December 16, 1913, the first officers were elected.

By 1903 there were two general stores, two saloons, a hardware store, a cheese factory and a blacksmith shop, but, also in 1903 a fire occurred which destroyed most of the business district. By 1914 Hustler was very much back in business with several more businesses established, including a bank, livery stable, feedmill, opera house, hotel, physician, lumberyard, meat market and railroad express and telegraph agent. By 1931 there were 3 gas stations, a big garage and car sales, another hotel, more saloons, two churches and a school house.
The population of Hustler never got over 200, but, most of the business and residents worked together and have kep the little village going. Every year since the 1930's Hustler has held a "Hustler Fest" which brings in people from near and far. In the last years Hustler has had tractor pulls which has been very popular. We can't forget the chicken barbecue which is on Sunday noon. It is cooked over charcoal by expert volunteers.
Since the 80's Hustler has gained several new homes and a bowling alley now operates in the building which was once the grade school where Shrek went to school.
