Nice views of Mount Morrison and the Red Rocks Amphitheater to the west and
the Denver Basin to the east from the cache site.
Dinosaur Ridge (also called Dakota Ridge and the Dakota Hogback) is composed
of Cretaceous-age Dakota Formation sandstones which are resistant to erosion
and dip to the east, they overlie Jurassic-age Morrison Formation shales
which also host nearby brontosaurus fossils. To the west is the
Pennsylvanian-Permian-age Fountain Formation sandstones which form the Red
Rocks Amphitheater.

Note: A National Geodetic Survey benchmark (e.g., PID# KK1850, a 3-inch bronze disk cemented to rock outcrop) labeled JCMD-001-1977 is within 100 feet SE of the Dinosaur Ridge Geocache Site. If you wish to check the accuracy of your GPS unit here are the NGS benchmark's WGS84 coordinates N39° 40.44201' W105° 11.55784', and the benchmark's elevation is 6226 feet or 1897.8 meters above Mean Sea Level. (Within 2 meters east of the benchmark are several fossilized tube-worm burrows.) See images below.

If you haven't logged it yet, please do so soon, as we plan to archive/retire the site on 31-Dec-2001, 1 year and 1 day after it was established. The site has earned a rest.
An informal archiving ceremony from noon-to-1pm, 31-Dec will be held near the site. All interested are invited; I'll have champagne for adults and root beer for the children, & you can autograph your picture in the Photo Album.
