Geocache Description:

The cache container is a 7.62mm ammo box. This is a short walk just off the culdesac on uneven terrain, the parking area is a little uneven also. I have acquired permission from the property owner

In 1893 the land very near to this Geocache was owned by Robert Keating and Francis H Root. Then it was sold to Penn Tanning Company, after which there were a few other land owners. In 1945 Howard J and Berneta L Baker purchased most of land near the Cache. Most residents know this area of Port Allegany as Bakers Acres, thus “ Bakers Acres Cache”.

About 1948 the first five homes on the left side of Katherine Street Ext. from the corner of Keating and Katherine Street were designed and built by Raymond V Hall and his associates. Howard J Baker was the Personnel Manager of Pittsburgh Corning Corp., he made these homes very desirable to the upper management of P.C. several homes were owned by P.C. personnel. As the area grew serveral other architects made their mark in Bakers Acres, such as Tom Coatesworth, John Suydam, Fred Hemmingway, Josph Kesmow and Preston Abbey, who was in charge of the radiant heating in the floors. All the homes had flat roofs radiant heating in the floors and used sandstone and flag stone in there construction.

Of course the work can’t get done without the building craftsmen, they include Jim Eicher, Rudy Anderson and Howard Gustafson, I’m sure there were many more

Check out the homes on you way to the cache, they were quit ahead of there time, back in the day
