Real Gone | Green Grass Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

seldom|seen: Putting one of my many maintenance challenging series to bed. This series contains some of my earliest puzzle creations, foreshadowing the plethora of S|S creations to follow.

As the years have progressed and my time and zeal for the sport has wained, so has the experience of the active geocache community, particularly when you work so hard to solve these puzzle and are then meet with unfulfilling and often unmaintained physical finals.

As tough as it is to let these go when I reflect on time and energy invested for the benefit of those who appreciated the same, I do have to accept that the experience created out of necessity to place a physical final (90% of my caches would be virtuals, if they were allowed to be) has soiled the experience once associated with finding log sheets to sign.

The S|S flag has been at half mast for a good half decade and it's time to take it down out of respect for the community. Thanks for finding these and your wonderful logs. This is the beginning of a long painful archiving process for hundreds of caches and I appreciate your patience and I put many to bad and ferret out those that I can continue to monitor and maintain.

If anybody is eager to adopt a series, feel free to PM me.

Geocache Description:

THIS IS A THEMED CACHE - IT IS ONLY BIG ENOUGH FOR PINS OR TINY TRINKETS.
Please trade items that are related to the cache description.

Lay your head where my heart used to be
Hold the earth above me
Lay down in the green grass
Remember when you loved me

Come closer don't be shy
Stand beneath a rainy sky
The moon is over the rise
Think of me as a train goes by

Getting back the Real Gone series so I can finish out the set. Much of "Real Gone" by Tom Waits carries an overriding chord of discord with the current incursions into the Middle East. Not from an anti-war standpoint, necessarily, but from the perspective of the day to day reality of what war is. Tom's latest release, "Orphans" also contains a number of songs with the same overriding theme and sense of wasted time, money, landscape and life that follows in the wake of war.

With the coming of spring and the the greening of the grass I think about what it means for soldiers to return home to their loved ones and to the sweat smell of the Midwest. I spent a short 6 months in those deserts 15 years ago and I can still remember getting off the plane and being overwhelmed by the smell of spring in Wisconsin.

Take a moment to reflect on the war. Remember those who served and continue to serve in that harsh, dry place and remember those who wont make it back to the green grasses of Wisconsin. Consider those who may return without any open arms to greet them on the tarmac. Call a serving family member oversees. Write a letter to your cousin, uncle, sister, father or mother now serving there. Let them know that you love them and miss them.

And when you go out to cut the lawn for the first time this spring, grab a few blades of grass, air-dry it, and send it along with that letter. What they wouldn't give for the whiff of the green grasses of home.

Cache should contain items related to waging Peace and supporting the forces on the ground both abroad and when they return home, which is when they need it most.

UPDATE:10.11.09 Final location changed (again) due to (continuous) issues with previous spot (and hide type).
