Glacial Kettle Lake
Kettle lakes in
the United States were formed during the most recent North American
Glaciation, the Wisconsin glaciation (70,000 to 10,000 years ago).
They are formed when a large piece of ice breaks away from the edge
of a retreating glacier, and becomes partially buried under
sediment deposited by the glacier. After the ice melts, a
depression is left in the ground. If the level of this hole is
below the water table, it fills with water and becomes what is
known as a kettle lake or hole.
Chenango Valley State Park is the site of two such kettle lakes-
Lily Lake and Chenango Lake ---- with a high glacial ridge between
the two. There are also numerous small dry kettle holes within the
park.
