Winchester Junction Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

Nubble: It has come to our attention that the area around GZ has become rather undesirable. As we have, also, moved away from the area maintenance has become an issue. We have, therefore, decided to archive this cache. Thanks to all cachers who took the time to attempt this cache.

Geocache Description:

The cache is located near the long since dismantled Winchester Junction where the old railway line to Alton branched off the main London to Southampton line.

Opened in October 1865, it was operated by the London and South Western Railway (LSWR) until nationalisation of the railways and eventually closed in February 1973.
Some old railway relics can still be seen along the 0.5 mile walk to the cache, including an old railway telegraph pole and a linesmans hut.
A few miles to the East of your start point the section of the line between Alresford and Alton survives and is operated privately by the Mid-Hants Railway (www.watercressline.co.uk).

The cache can be found by noting the number of letters in each word in the title on the sign at the above coordinates and substituting them in the following formula:

N 51 deg 0c.abc
W 01 deg 1a.dea

where a=the No. of letters in the 2nd word
b=the No. of letters in the 5th word
c=the No. of letters in the 4th word
d=twice the No. of letters in the 1st word
e=half the number of letters in the 3rd word

The cache is a smallish clip-lock plastic container.
Enjoy your walk and the other piece of history. The route to the cache can be a little muddy in wet weather.
