Geocache Description:

It is surprising to me that given the number of ACT cachers, that there were no caches in Queanbeyan (until now).

Queanbeyan is the largest city in south east NSW and has a city population of in excess of 37,000, growing at about 3% per annum. In 1828 an ex-convict named Timothy Beard, who was known to be an innkeeper from Campbelltown, had a squattage called 'Quinbean' (Aboriginal for clear waters) on the Molonglo River. Beard was credited with having the first settlement close to the present site of Queanbeyan, though his occupancy was illegal.

The first Post Office was established in Crawford Street to service settlers in 1836 and Queanbeyan was officially proclaimed a township in 1838 with a population of approximately 50 persons. Some of the significant historic buildings from that time are still standing. 1851 saw the discovery of gold traces in the area; lead and silver mines also flourished briefly. Bushrangers harassed settlers of which John Tennant, Jacky Jacky, Frank Gardiner and Ben Hall were some of the more notorious who worked the area. The "Golden Age' was Queanbeyan's first newspaper and was founded in 1860 by John Gale. Queanbeyan, prospering as a primary producing area, was proclaimed a Municipality in February, 1885. City status was granted on the 7th July, 1972.

Queanbeyan Town Park is a pleasant area close to the centre of town, featuring many facilities including a velodrome. There are many plaques and memorials in the park, wander around and look at a few while you are here. This area is a very busy muggle spot. However the area is well lit, making night caching a possibility.

This is a fairly straightforward offset cache. At the above coordinates, find out what year E. H. Land was Mayor.

Please note the slight adjustment to the original coordinates.

The cache is accessible from the path, THERE IS NO NEED TO TRAMPLE THE GARDENS. This is edition #2 of the cache, the first one was taken by muggles so PLEASE take care to retrieve & replace it discretely.
