Geocache Description:

Welcome to the town of Brukunga, the home to one of only 2 sulphur mines in Australia

The Brukunga mine was opened in June 1955 to mine pyrite (FeS2 for all you chemistry buffs out there like myself ) for the production of sulphuric acid to makes Superphosphate fertilizer after WWII. The mine produced 5.5 million tonnes of iron sulphide ore over the 17 years the mine was opened before closing in May 1972. Unfortunately, when the mine closed, the excess waste rock was dumped next to Dawesley Creek. The sulphur in the rock is oxidised when exposed to air (forming sulphate, SO4) and when combined with water, forms sulphuric acid.

There is a monitoring system and acid treatment plant in place to help control the acidic water and the area is undergoing immense revegetation.

You are looking for a lunch box painted brown containing 2 writbands, a rubber duck, crab toy, bubbles, poker chip keyring, Fat Cat figurine and 'Saving Shiloh' TB

Don't forget to enjoy the nearby bakeries at Nairne. Mmmm
