Geocache Description:

This traditional geocache is located near the first beach on Cape Breton Island in Troy, Inverness County, Nova Scotia.

It is suggested that Ghost Beach was named for its association with a local tale of pirate treasure buried near the adjoining Long pond. Begin your search after parking near the Canso Canal Bridge, beside the commemorative kiosk, in the public lot at N 45' 38.878 W 61' 24.733. This portion of the Trans Canada Trail is constructed on the rail bed of the former Inverness Railway (1899-1924) and the Canadian National Railway (1924-1988). Proceed north along the trail, to the right of the compound and cross over the Ghost Beach Bridge. In conjunction with the Ceilidh Coastal Trail Association, the staff of the Canadian Forces School of Military Engineering, based at CFB Gagetown in New Brunswick, placed this pedestrian bridge at the mouth of Long Pond on May 15, 2002. The Ghost Beach Bridge replaced the 'trestle' that once occupied this span. The 'trestle' was once a favorite jumping and swimming spot for local teens. On the fall of the tide, the sun warmed water flows out of Long pond. I don't know the water and bottom conditions of recent years and urge caution to anyone so inclined to put a toe in the water. You will find the cache at N 45' 39.544 W 61' 25.565 after, approximately, a 20 minute trek. On the day when the cache was placed there were numerous eagles on the new sea ice on the Strait and in a tree along Long Pond. The cache originally contained: a rubber duck, an LCD keychain, a package of hand warmers, a suction cup clip, a CD of '60's British Rock, ghost erasers, a frog magnetic clip, a maple tap, a foam ball, a creature from the black lagoon keychain and a LCD tool kit. Please sign the log for credit.
