Geocache Description:

Paradise River Trails Letterboxes

LET’S LEARN TO LETTERBOX!

PLEASE NOTE: This series of boxes are LETTERBOXES. I have listed them on the Geocaching Site so that we can all enjoy the fun but if you do look for them I ask you to treat them as Letterboxes. This means:

1.There is a hand-carved rubberstamp in each one that you should stamp your personal logbook with. You NEVER remove the rubberstamp from the box.

2.You should be bringing a rubberstamp (hand-carved{traditional method} or store-bought), a logbook, and a small ink pad or a set of markers if you want to make multi-coloured stamps, with you so you can log into one or more of the logbooks. (You can get these things at the Dollar Store). If you don’t have a stamp or ink, please sign the book and draw a picture, but stamping in really is the whole point of letterboxing. ****I WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE IT IF YOU COULD BRING A FEW BABY WIPES OR PAPER TOWEL AND WATER ALONG TO CLEAN OFF THE STAMP AFTER YOU USE IT. I WILL CLEAN THEM ON A REGULAR BASIS BUT IF WE ALL TAKE THE TIME TO DO IT, IT WILL KEEP THE STAMPS IN NICE SHAPE FOR EVERYONE. THANKS!****

3.There isn’t really room in these boxes to leave Geocaching trinkets. I encourage you to leave travel bugs and geocoins, but there isn't room for much else. It isn't possible to log which box will contain the travel bug/geocoin, so you will have to check them all if one is listed.

4.You can find these boxes with out a GPS unit, just follow the directions below. This is the traditional letterboxing way of providing clues and I strongly encourage you to try it. However, for those of you that would like the GPS co-ords. as well, I have left the co-ords. to the next box in each one. (i.e. The co-ords. to box 3 are in box 2.)

5. I really want to stress that the purpose of these boxes are to teach people about Letterboxing. If you are going to take the time to look for the boxes I ask that you get the stamping materials needed and treat the boxes the way they were meant to be treated.

6.If letterboxing interests you, I strongly encourage you to check out the sites www.atlasquest.com and www.letterboxing.org where there is a wealth of information. Letterboxing is still in its pioneer days in this area, and we need more people hiding, creating, and seeking this wonderful art form. You can also contact me at jenwin@shaw.ca if you have any questions; I would be thrilled to share more about this hobby with you.

Ok, if you are still interested in looking for these boxes here are the clues to find them. REMEMBER- YOU DON’T HAVE TO SIGN EVERY BOOK IF THERE ARE TOO MANY PEOPLE AROUND. THAT’S WHY THERE IS A LOGBOOK IN EACH ONE. BUT IF IT IS QUIET, FEEL FREE.

****IF YOU ARE GOING TO USE GPS AND NOT THE CLUES YOU MAY NOT WANT TO READ ANY FURTHER ALTHOUGH I RECOMMEND YOU TRY THE CLUES AS THIS IS THE TRADITIONAL METHOD AND USE THE GPS AS A FALLBACK. EITHER WAY, I HOPE YOU ENJOY THEM.****

Box One

Park at the side of the road near Cliffs & Wilson Avenue. You may want boots during the Spring, Fall and Winter and some swimming gear so you can go for a dip in the Summer. Head down dirt road toward the gates with DANGER and NO TRESPASSING on them. Beside the gates on the right side is a footpath through the fence. Follow this path along the fence line and into the woods.

Continue down the trail for about five minutes until you reach an intersection with a road sized trail. Go left down the road sized trail trail, and then go right(off the road sized trail now) when the trail splits. Walk along this trail for about 5 minutes until you see a mound with two large multi-trunked, gnarled trees on the right-hand side off the path about 25 feet. There is a stump in front of this mound and the first box is hidden inside it. *CHECK FOR MUGGLES BEFORE STAMPING IN.

Box Two

Return to the path and continue down it in the direction that you were headed. While walking down this path you will pass 3 trails that go off to the left but continue on until you reach the fourth path that heads left. I have marked this trail with a small piece of marking tape. This trail intersects with another very soon, go right and down the hill. Continue down this path until you see the river ahead of you. Right before you get to the beach area you will see a path to the left. At the beginning of this path there is a 9 trunk tree on a mound with a big fern. Box 2 is at its base.

Box Three

You may want to go down to the river and check out the water for a bit before returning to the path that you came by. Follow this trail back up the hill until it joins another and go to the right. You will soon see a very old derelict car. Box 3 is hidden behind the front wheel.

Box Four

Continue on this path until you reach a fork that goes 1 way to the left and and 2 paths to the right. Face the 2 paths to the right and take the left one of these two. There are two twin stumps on this path, behind the left one is the fourth box.

Box Five

Continue on this path, when path splits in 3 take the small path in the middle toward the river. Enjoy the view of the water! This might be harder to see in the summer. Walk toward first big stump. There is a huge tree behind it and box five is at the large tree’s base.
You have found all the boxes! Now you can go to the swimming hole or you can head back out. For now, continue along this river side trail and enjoy the scenery. There is a significant drop along the side of the trail so please watch and children on the path carefully. Keep on the river side trail until you reach a V then go left and then right almost right away. Take this trail until it joins the large road-sized trail again. You can follow this road-sized trail to the left and back to the trail by the telephone pole to leave the woods or you can take the large trail to the right and down the hill. At the bottom of the hill is a path to the right which will take you to the Paradise Swimming Hole. Have fun!
