Geocache Description:

Free fish bait!

When we were little one of our favorite pastimes was fishing. (Hey, we didn't have video games or children's TV!) We dipped 'minners' with a fine shrimp net or short seine, put them in a can and thereby had our bait for the trip. We would get 'Racehorse Minners', Brim Minners' and 'crawdads', but far and away our most common catch was the 'Pot-Gut Minner'. What we called the Pot-Gut is in fact the Mosquito Fish or Gambusia. It is a very important fish in these parts because it's favorite foods are the larvae and pupae of the mosquito. Every lake, river, creek, stream and ditch around here has these fish, and although the mosquitos still number in the millions, they would be MUCH MUCH worse if not for these tiny fellows. The female is almost always pregnant, hence the Pot-Gut name. The males are much smaller and once in a while we would catch one that was speckled black and white. we called these 'Catfish Minners' and had no idea that they were just another color phase of the same thing. Once we had our minners we would come down to the creek and fish right here where the cache is. We would catch Bluegill with the occasional Speckled Perch thrown in but never very many of either. There is a boat ramp here, and although small, it can get pretty busy. Muggles abound at times. The cache is a metal Nano container and should only be a problem for the shortest of cachers.
