Geocache Description:

A short walk in limestone quarry country to a cache by an abandoned railway.

The sheer scale of the limestone quarrying industry in the Buxton area is often hidden away from anyone who only drives through the area. Once you get onto the footpaths it becomes clear just how big are those holes in the ground. If you take the path along the ridge above Earl Sterndale you can look down into the Hindlow and Dowlow quarries whilst the final approach to the cache gives glimpses of the other Hindlow quarry operated by Lhoist.

The area was served by the Cromford and High Peak Railway which wound its way through the area via sharp curves and the use of a number of inclines up which the wagons were hauled by stationary steam engines. On the opening of the Buxton to Ashbourne railway some sections were incorporated in the new line whilst others were abandoned.

The approach to the cache uses a footpath on the trackbed of a section of this railway which was abandoned in 1892 and replaced by the new line through Hindlow Tunnel which can be seen from the nearby bridge. Across the present day active railway there is even the remains of a triangular section of railway which allowed wagons to be turned round so that their end door was facing uphill when being run on the inclines.

The cache is a small sandwich box initially containing the usual selection of quality Lost Boize goodies.
