If you've ever been a few miles into Henry Coe State Park, then you've probably seen one of the many empty boar traps (big metal cages). They try, but they will never catch The Pacheco Pig. No way!
The Pacheco Pig has lived in the Coe area since time immemorial. Some say he's a legend, but the eagle-eyed geocacher will know differently. Rumor has it that he enjoys the remote tranquility and refreshing spray of Pacheco Falls--named in his honor--about 15-20 miles RT from any human entrance.
Since this is a fairly long hike with lots of exposed trails, bring plenty of water (or a filter), leave the kids at home, and note that it isn't downhill the whole way back. The good news is that southern Coe is more forgiving than northern Coe. However, if you've never been to Henry Coe, this would not be a good first visit.
The cache is about 30 ft off the trail--uphill--and easy to reach and see. The Pacheco Pig does not need to hide, for the remoteness limits likely visitors.
Do not miss the namesake falls, which are audible from the cache location (and very close). On the way back up the road, there is an unmarked trail which goes to the top of the falls--it's quite an amazing view and rivals the falls in coolness (but be careful, it's a long drop, which is probably why they don't mark the trail). Watch for ticks any time you go through a lot of brush and/or sit down out there--flicked off many on this trip; removed two later.
