The monument to our finest patriot was unveiled on 22 September 1814, the anniversary of his greatest victory at the battle of Stirling Bridge in 1297. Carved from sandstone by local sculptor John Smith of Darnick. The dramatic statue gazes out across the river Tweed, with great views over the Eildon Hills. Wallace spent a lot of time in this area, building his army in the Selkirk forest before heading north to the highlands. Oor Wullie was declared guardian of Scotland just a few miles from here at the ‘Kirk O’ the Forest’ in 1297 (GCXJPZ).
Unfortunately the monument was vandalized in 2005, when Wallace’s shield was painted blue and white by some over enthusiastic patriots. Due to the porous qualities of sandstone, the paint is irremovable. However, the statue still remains impressive and loses none of its charm, set high upon its pedestal in the beautiful border lands.
