Geocache Description:

A cache and dash at the grave of the famous Reiver Johnnie Armstrong of Gilnockie.

G:UK cache rating

Known as Scotlands Robin Hood, Johnnie Armstrong was a popular reiver in the debatable lands.

In 1530 the teenage king James V of Scotland decided to tame these lands. After imprisoning most of the border reiver chiefs, he set his targets on Armstrong. Johnnie ran a protection racket across the borderline and had become quite rich and powerful, which made the king very nervous indeed. A meeting was arranged here at Carlenrig. But when Johnnie arrived, he was welcomed only by a noose on a tree. He pleaded for his and the lives of his 50 followers but all were hanged without trial and thrown into the pit, now marked by the stone.

Take the chance to visit the atmospheric old graveyard just a few meters away, where you will find Johnnies gravestone near another famous Scot; poet Henry Scott Riddell.
