Cipher School - Phone A Friend Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

fraygirls: We were on this side of town and stopped to check on this one. It was still snug as a bug in its home, but it's time to archive. The surrounding area is lovely (except for the occasional gun in the shrubs), and is deserving of a hide that's easy for all to figure out and find. Thanks to all who deciphered and/or visited over the years!

Geocache Description:

ci•pher also cy•pher

1. A cryptographic system in which units of plain text of regular length, usually letters, are arbitrarily transposed or substituted according to a predetermined code.
2. The key to such a system.
3. A message written or transmitted in such a system.

Welcome to Cipher School! Today’s lesson…Substitution Ciphers!

Substitution is a method of text suppression in which the plaintext (the hidden message) is replaced by letters, numbers, or other symbols while its original letter or word order remains unchanged. There are countless methods that can be employed within this cipher set…the possibilities are only limited by one’s imagination.

Many substitution ciphers involve the use of numbers. In a simple alphanumeric cipher, standard alphabetic positions could be reversed: A = 1 through Z = 26 would become A = 26 through Z = 1. Of course, they can’t all be that uncomplicated…at first. Just remember that the most effective ciphers – no matter how complex they may initially appear to be – are usually easily refined into a much simpler form.

We are not sure about the origin of the following cipher. We have never seen it before, but it is foolproof and simple…once you figure out the necessary refinements. For all we know, it sprang forth from the mind of the head fraygirl during a caffeine-induced reverie. If there’s anyone out there who recognizes this substitution technique, please contact us with any information you have about it. We want to give credit where it is due!

Decipher the following message to reveal the real coordinates for the cache!
