The cache is an ammo box located just off an easy walk alongside a
restored section of the canal side walk in Newport Shropshire.
If you want a much longer walk you could start at Hanging arround
the Rugby Pitch come to this one after stage one of that cache and
return back to your car via Moss pool over the busy A41.
There are plenty of places to park and eat in Newport and a few
other caches as well.
The canal which connected Shrewsbury to the Liverpool to Birmingham
canal was officially abandoned in the 1940’s.
A plan to restore the canal was started in the 1960’s however
restrictions at the time on restoration projects in general held
back the plan.
When these restrictions started to lift in the 1970’s enough of the
old canal had been systematically destroyed by local landowners to
prevent any immediate re-opening.
This section of the old canal comprising several locks and an old
canal basin has been beautifully restored and a more ambitious
countrywide restoration plan for these old canals is now being put
in place.
To reach the cache cross over to the left hand side of the canal
and follow the arrow on the GPS’r.
This cache replaces our previous effort
Up the dry cut
which got muggled a few years ago.
Hopefully this one will prove to be a better hide than its sadly
muggled predecesor.
The cache is a short distance to the left of the canal, take the
tow path to the end and then follow the arrow to the final cache
location.
