Geocache Description:

The Berwick Tunnel. A new container larger and more waterproof than last time. Lots of nettles in the summer so be prepared for stings or take protection. A note to the Haywood Hornet shorts are NOT considered as nettle protection ! http://www.geocaching.com/seek/log.aspx?LUID=056e322c-54c3-43f0-a5d9-9e9ce8b006c3

Constructed in 1797 for reasons unknown this cache marks one of the two entrances to the Berwick Tunnel.
Update courtesy of "big farmer giles"

The Berwick tunnel was constructed because the Burton landowner at the time would not allow the canal to cut across his land saying if you want to cross you'll have to go under it and that's what they did.

At the time of construction one of the first and definitely the longest canal tunnel in the world.
Measuring 970 yards long and notable for the fact that it originally had a wooden towpath, although this was removed in 1819.
The gate at this end is most definitely locked, allthough there is a rumour that the other end of this fine example of engineering is open for those that dare to enter and possibly walk where there is no public right of way.
The tunnel curves and led to one of the first pieces of canal legislation which states that when two barges meet in a tunnel, the one furthest along its journey takes precedence!
If only it was that simple these days.....

See if you can spot the date stone nearby.
Bonus points for photos of you underneath it.
Please hide the cache carefully and as far round the corner as possible to prevent it being muggled.
