Geocache Description:

This micro on the Santa Cruz west side will introduce you to a little bit of local food-processing history

While the buildings nearby this micro cache currently house a number of small and diverse thriving local businesses, the buildings were originally built for one purpose: processing and packaging brussel sprouts. "Crown King" was one of the brand names given the packaged foods produced here, as well as "Crown Queen" and "Crown Prince."

In 1948 the first processing plant was built just to the east of these coordinates by the Artichoke and Sprout Growers Association and a portion of the plant was leased to Birds Eye Frozen Foods. When Birds Eye's needs increased, those operations required an expansion which is when the buildings directly nearby the posted coordinates were added to the site.

Food processing continued at the site until 1989.

Additional information and memorabilia regarding this site's food processing history can be found inside the nearby bakery, though you do not need to go inside to find the cache.

While the food processing industry has moved on for good, it is good to see that the site has been redeveloped and is doing so well.

Some stealth may be necessary dedpending upon when you visit and how busy the site is.

Enjoy! And happy caching!
