Geocache Description:

This cache is located in Burger Hill Park in Rhinebeck, NY. This is a small park that provides some incredible views of the Hudson Valley and beyond. The entrance and parking for Burger Hill Park are on Rte. 9G. The coordinates for the parking lot are N 41* 55.300 W 073* 52.450. This park is open from sunrise to 8:30pm during most of the year and sunrise to ½ hour after sunset during the winter months. The park is essentially a large hill that rises to 550 feet and is totally open as this area was farm fields. During winter this is a very popular park for kids and families as it is a terrific place to go sleigh riding. Whenever there’s snow on the ground, there’s bound to be plenty of people here. The views from the top of the hill are just fantastic all year round and are really worth it during the foliage change in the fall. There is a kiosk by the parking lot with a log book and information about the park and the organizations who maintain it. They can use our help if you’d like to give a little to keep this beautiful area as clean and maintained as I’ve always seen it. Visit the website for more information on this park. (visit link)

The cache is an 8x6x3 plastic container concealed in another container that makes for a slightly more challenging hide. This is a winter friendly cache and should be able to be found even in a couple feet of snow if someone were so inclined. Satellite reception is very good here, so you should still be able to find it without too much trouble. After leaving the parking area, take the path going up the hill. The path is well maintained all year round and is easily followed. If you have any question as to where to go, just keep going UP. The GPSr may try to lead you off the path, but the best way to go is to take it all the way to the top of the hill and go from there. For those interested in benchmarks, there is a disk mounted in a concrete square at the top of the hill in the open. There is NO need to trespass when finding this cache, so respect the local homes and don’t do it. The total track for this is just under a mile and can be done in around a half hour. This is for a steady pace up the hill and will depend on your pace. Of course, you may spend more time at the top to take photos of the panoramic views, but you get the point. If there’s snow on the hill, bring some sleds and you could get back to the car in a minute! Please place the cache back the way you find it to keep muggles away. The difficulty and terrain ratings are averaged out to depend on the time of year. This is not a hard hike, but is fairly steep. The hide is a little different, but many cachers may have seen one like this before.

The cache is named for the monster that terrorized Japan for years. Legend has it that after soaring across the world, Rodan came to settle here. Burrowing into the hillside, Rodan was trapped by local mysitics. The benchmark disk at the top of the hill is actually an enchanted seal that keeps the beast at rest. If you place your ear to the seal, you may actually hear the heartbeat and breathing of the creature. It’s only a matter of time before he awakes, so visit the hill before it’s destroyed! Well, that’s what I heard.

Original contents of the cache include: An engraved FTF Token (non trackable) for the first cacher to locate it. It is attached to the log book, please feel free to keep it. Puss...in boots TB starting his journey, a Diabetes TB, my own Zephyr Geocoin, a pet ID container, small swag, and of course a log book. Thanks and enjoy the cache and the park.
