Geocache Description:

A nice historical tour of Chichester, the walk includes steps so may not be pushchair / wheelchair friendly. The cache should take approximately 2 hours to complete. Access to the parks essential to complete the cache is restricted to daylight hours.

The above co-ordinates are for the North Gate car park in Chichester, the starting point for Charlotte’s Chichester Cache. Charlotte is our recent addition to the population of Chichester, so it was only fitting to name this cache after her.

Chichester, the county town of West Sussex was called Noviomagnus by Ptolemy in Roman times. The name "Chichester" derives from the Saxon "Cissa’s ceaster" meaning Cissa’s camp. The foundations of the original Roman wall remain but additions have been made since, most recently in the 18th Century. The cache will take you on a tour of some of the historical highlights of Chichester including the walls, and our beautiful Cathedral.

During your tour clues will have to be gathered to identify the final location of the cache.

Let the tour begin…

The first co-ordinate is:

N50 50.394 W000 46.714

This will take you to the original location of the north gates, demolished in the 18th Century. Find the yellow markers above the North Walls sign and subtract the first number from the last number: Answer = A

The next co-ordinate is:

N50 50.267 W000 47.032

You will find a date on the wall of a traditionally built residence. The total of the last two digits of the date = C

Then head south to find the tallest tree in Chichester situated in the Bishop’s Palace Gardens:

N50 50.159 W000 47.001

It is a Giant Sequoia and is the largest seed plant in the world. It originates from the Sierra Nevada of California and was introduced into Britain in 1853. The last number on the tag on the tree = D

Take your time walking through the gardens, they are a fantastic place to relax. Famous visitors to the gardens include Mahatma Gandhi who stayed with Bishop Bell at the palace in autumn 1931.

Follow in the footsteps of Chichester’s only Saint who was Bishop of Chichester (1245–1253) to:

N50 50.141 W000 46.856

Note the number of letters in the name of the Saint on the sign before the arch(not including the ‘S) and subtract 4. Answer = E

Stroll through and perhaps stop for lunch or a drink at the Cloisters Café before checking the time on the 18th Century timepiece on the south west tower of the cathedral at:

N50 50.167 W000 46.893

What type of timepiece is it? Number of letters = F

Continue to the centre of the four main streets in Chichester:

N50 50.190 W000 46.752

Here you will find the famous market Cross built in 1501 by Edward Story, Bishop of Chichester from 1477-1503. How many archways can you walk through at the base of the cross?
G = C – number of archways.

Next onto the alleyway at:

N50 50.213 W000 46.723

This alleyway was originally named The Shambles and was the location of a number of slaughterhouses. What shape is the “S” in the present name for this alleyway?

B= number of letters in the shape – 5.

Continue along the path and meander through the town past the site of the old Shippam’s paste factory to:

N50 50.171 W000 46.455

This was the original location of Sharp Garland Ltd. Established in 1665 Sharp Garland Ltd was the oldest grocery shop in Britain until its demolition in 1964. When was the new Sharp Garland House built? Add all the digits, then subtract 14. Answer=H

Head towards:

N50 50.384 W000 46.540

Priory Park was a gift from the 7th Duke of Richmond and Gordon to the citizens of Chichester in 1918 and provides a wonderful venue for Sporting and Musical events. We asked 'What is the last digit of the date first mentioned on the plaque on the mound?', but sadly now the mound is fenced off due to vandalism and the plaque removed so you'll need to know the last digit of the year of the Battle of Hastings for this one! Answer = L

Continue around the wall to:

N50 50.403 W000 46.651

Here you will find a sensory garden, beautifully aromatic during the summer months, but what Rotary Club event does it celebrate? Number of letters in event = J

Opened in 1962 the celebrated Chichester Festival Theatre had Sir Laurence Olivier as its first director.Find the statue of Spartacus in chains outside of the theatre at:

N50 50.578 W000 46.660

What is Spartacus holding between his hands? Answer = M

The rest is simple, just apply the numbers that you have collected to the co-ordinates below and find the cache!
