Geocache Description:

Hidden by a proud member of the Florida Caching

Large camoed container with logbook, pen and assorted swag. Please try to tread lightly!

Henri "Black" Caesar was a Haitian slave who escaped to Florida's west coast in the late 1790's-early 1800's. His base was Sanibel Island, but he was no stranger to Biscayne Bay. Legend has it that he captured a Spanish Galleon carrying a large shipment of silver. On the north end of Key Largo, Black Caesar made the Spaniards dig a hole to bury the silver in, then killed them and threw them in the hole, too. Some people say the silver is somewhere on Elliot Key, but wherever it is, it has yet to be found. Other legends say that Caesar's main pirating consisted of capturing slave ships and releasing the slaves...thus helping to populate the Bahamas. Caesar's Creek was named after this locally infamous pirate, as well as Black Point (way before the county marina was ever thought of!). I haven't heard or read of Caesar having anything dealings around this area of Key Biscayne, but who knows! I bet he walked these shores at least once or twice...so think about old Henri when you hunt for this "treasure".
