A fun day hike outside of Page, Arizona. There are several options
to extend this hike but leave early and take plenty of water in the
summer.
This involves a fun hike up in the rocks. You need a basic 4WD to
shorten the hike. Take the short asphalt road on the west side of
Hwy. 89 across from the south entrance to Greenehaven. Drive 1.6
miles west after the asphalt ends on the good dirt road and take
the dirt road angling to the left - south-west - BEFORE you get to
the old seismograph bunker. When that road soon splits take the
left fork over the cattle guard. You are now on the dirt road you
need to be on. Your GPS should be pointing straight ahead! One
little trick - when you come to a rocky knoll and road which drops
off to the right - take it. It is a short piece which leads
directly to the area to park before the hike which is a kind of "Y"
in the road up against a wilderness area sign. Follow your GPS. If
you vary a bit to the north on your way up the terrain is a bit
easier. A straight shot is better exercise climbing some pretty
rocks with lots of up and down. You choose. You will be on top of a
small rocky spine with a great view. Look for the small pile of
rocks at your feet while looking easterly. I give these tips
because the climb up is enough that you really want to find this
cache. It is in a plastic cylinder painted to match the rocks. For
more fun, follow the ridge to the south and you can overlook Lee's
Ferry and the Colorado River. Give yourself plenty of time,
however. You DO NOT want to be scrambling back in the dark!
