Geocache Description:

The cache is an ammo can. There is a dirt road leading to the location. If the road is dry, a car or 2WD should be fine. If wet, use caution. Please obey the signs on the fence surrounding the transmitter site. You can park near it and the cache is just a short walk away.

This is a small series I put together to point out other forms of navigation. Although GPS is used for aviation navigation, these older forms of navigation are still widely used throughout the world.

A Non-Directional Beacon (NDB) is a radio broadcast station in a known location, used as an aviation or marine navigational aid. The Sturgeon NDB is operated on a frequency of 333 kHz and is identified by a three-letter Morse code callsign. This one broadcasts a code of: STI. Even with the advent of VOR systems and GPS navigation, NDBs continue to be the most widely-used navigational aid worldwide.

NDBs have one major advantage over the more sophisticated VOR: NDB signals follow the curvature of the earth, so they can be received at much greater distances at lower altitudes. However, the NDB signal is affected more by atmospheric conditions, mountainous terrain, coastal refraction and electrical storms, particularly at long range.
