Preview: The Stones River Greenway offers hikers a chance to enjoy human and natural history in Murfreesboro. This paved path links earthworks and important sites from the Civil War’s Battle of Stones River as it courses alongside the attractive Stones River. This greenway opened in 1997 and forms the link between various parcels of preserved portions of the Stones River National Battlefield. But this trail is not only about Civil War history, it is also about recreation and appealing natural scenery along the Stones River as it flows through Murfreesboro. The nearly level trail leaves the old Fortress Rosecrans, then heads north, passing sites such as Braxton Bragg’s Headquarters before ending near the old McFadden farm.
