Geocache Description:

This earth cache is water accessible only so bring your canoe, motor boat, skis or snowmobile.
If fact, when you reach the coordinates, you are still on the lake. What you see in front of you is a small island.

The exposed rock face of this island tells a story. The rock you are looking at is called breccias. Breccias are composed entirely of rock and mineral fragments in a matrix of smaller, but similar, fragments. The rocks at the target site are melted, shattered, and mixed during the impact explosion.

This rock is the result of a meteor that hit this location thousands of years ago. The impact of a meteor shatters the base rock, deforms it, melts it and re-assembles the rock with new properties. “Breccias” is the new rock that is formed.

Skelton Lake is the largest open body of water within the Muskoka Lakes and is generally round in shape.

Public access point into Skeleton Lake is somewhat limited. There are three access points on the south side of the lake off of Highway 141….Skeleton Lake Rd 2 and 3 and Simms Rd. There is a boat launch ramp at Skeleton Lake Rd 3.

In order to record a find to this earthcache….place yourself at the posted coordinate and take note of the rock. You won’t find this rock in too many places. Just for fun, take a picture of yourself and your mode of transportation and post it! Look for a communication tower in the distance. Next….ski, boat, sled or use whatever mode of transportation you have and travel toward that tower. When you get to the other shore of the open lake…you will find a steep shoreline. That is the other side of the crater. Note that distance…that will give you an idea as to the diameter of the meteor. Email that number prior to recording your find.
