Geocache Description:

A short two-stage cache that provides a check of your GPSr’s accuracy and an exercise of its capabilities.

Recently, we spotted a witness post for a survey benchmark along a road that we travel frequently. Since it is located adjacent to a county park, we thought this would be a good spot to place a cache that would allow cachers to check the accuracy of their equipment while hunting a cache.

The benchmark’s precise location is 33 58’ 06.112”N, 84 27’ 18.727”W and the posted coords are within 10 inches of the center of the benchmark. The benchmark is a brass disk set on the concrete structure of a bridge at an elevation of 917.967 feet. If the posted coords are entered in your GPSr and it is directly above the benchmark, any distance-to-go indication is the error of your GPSr at this particular time and location. It would be interesting to see the results of your accuracy check in your log entry.

The cache is located 17 meters from the benchmark in an easting direction and somewhat north of it. Notice that a six digit number is stamped on the disk. If 161025 is subtracted from the stamped number, the difference is the number of meters to travel in a northing direction to find to the cache.

The original cache container was lost when a work crew cleared the wooded area it was hidden in. The current cache is a small metal box containing only the log. Because it has been relocated, previous finders are welcome to hunt and log it again.
