Geocache Description:

IGO Camping Two ( Too )

Come one, come all to...

IGO Camping II (aka IGO Camping... Too)

Friday-Saturday-Sunday...June 1-3, 2007
at Saylorville's Fleabane Group Camp Loop

History

In 2005 "IGO Camping" was a lot of fun...despite the t-storms and tornado warnings. IGO Camping II never quite got off the ground in 2006 but I'm not about to let it die so easily. The first event featured a handful of temporary caches hidden at Otter Creek Lake in Tama County. In 2007 "IGO Camping" will be a little different, and hopefully we can do without the t-storms too.

Why June 1-3?

A short time ago the IGO received an e-mail announcement that included this information:

The Trails and Greenways Advisory Commitee (citizens members representing Des Moines Parks and Rec, West Des Moines Parks and Rec, and the Polk County Conservation Board) have agreed to sponsor a weekend event supporting and celebrating trails in our area.

Dates: June 2 and 3 (Saturday and Sunday). June 2 is National Trails Day, celebrated across the country.
Our event: Trail Daze

Sponsored/promoted by: Des Moines Park and Rec and Polk County Conversation Board. Read sponsorship as staff help with promotion and press releases. Other groups may chose to join us.

The events don't need to be entirely on trails, but the theme is to promote outdoor activities on our trails. And if the best way to get this done is to dip into Dallas or Warren County, okay, but best to keep this to Polk County. It would be great if we could introduce folks to some under-used trails.

Wanna Camp?

In response to this I've booked the Fleabane Group Camp Loop at Saylorville (see http://recreation.gov for additional reservation details and info) for up to 36 individuals. That is 6 RV and 6 tent units or some combination of RVs and tents for a total of 12 units and 36 occupants. All of the RV sites are already spoken for at a cost of $28 per site (for 2 nights camping with electric hookup). If you would like to "reserve" one of the remaining tent sites (proposed tent cost is $10 for 2 nights) please check the IGO forum thread at http://forums.iowageocachers.org/viewtopic.php?t=1382 and post a note to claim a spot. The loop camps are very nice. This ia a circle-the-wagons campsite with an open sided shelter in the center.

Though we have no RV sites remaining there are still a lot of great camp sites nearby at Saylorville that can be reserved online via http://recreation.gov.

In addition to the group caching that we'll plan for Saturday, campers in the loop can expect that we'll have a group campfire and probably potluck supper each evening. Cacher campers from other sites as well as visitors will be welcome to drop in for the potluck supper and campfire as long as we don't exceed any park limits for such gatherings.

Event Details

A few DM-area IGO members have volunteered to hide caches in conjunction with this event and with "Trail Daze". There will be a mix of permanent (listed at geocaching.com) and temporary caches but any that are listed won't be available at Geocaching.com until June 3 at the earliest. We will make the information available at the group camp site on Saturday morning, June 2nd. So, come and camp with us OR watch this page for additional information (like exact time and location) where you can pick up the cache list and join others in some group caching in and around DM.
