This is the first geocaching event to be held in Marathon Ontario. This event will take place on Saturday, May 26, 2007 at the 1st Marathon Scout Camp on Three Finger Lake outside of Marathon, Ontario.
This geocaching event will be held in conjunction with the annual tree plant for the 1st Marathon Scout Group which takes place on the last weekend in May. We will be planting trees in the morning and discussing geocaching in the afternoon.
Geocachers from the area (Thunder Bay to Timmins and beyond) are invited to attend to help plant some trees and after discuss geocaching, what is involved in setting up new caches, types of caches, maintenance of caches and generally encouraging geocaching in the area. This event will be open to anyone in the area who may be interested in learning more about geocaching and how to get involved. We have a fair number of people in the area who have expressed interest in geocaching.
We will be also be holding a Geocache Treasure Hunt. A series of caches will be hidden around the Marathon Scout Camp area. Besides having fun, the intent of the treasure hunt is to show the younger persons attending and others, more about the geocaching hobby. So plan to attend and help introduce new people, young and old, to geocaching.
There are plenty of geocaches in the Marathon (~60) to try to find during your visit.
Lunch and supper will be available during the event for a nominal cost. So come on out – plant some trees – show what you know about geocaching – help introduce new persons to the hobby – enjoy the campfire on Saturday night. Camping (tents only) is available during the weekend (bring your own tents, etc.)
Please, sign up now, so we can plan for meals and other activities.
This year the scouts and others will be planting 2,000 to 2,500 trees on the Lafarge Canada property next door to the Scout Camp and 500 trees on the Marathon Cross-Country Ski Trails. The trees, jackpine ,balsam fir, spruce, are usually 15-20 cm. in height.
Further details will be posted as the event date approaches.
UPDATE - MAY 13, 2007:
Only 13 days to the event. Tentative times are as follows:
~10:00 AM - Tree Planting - 1,500 at Lafarge and 500 at Marathon cross-country ski club trails
~12:00 noon - lunch when tree planting is finished
~13:00 - Registration and Geocaching discussion starts
~14:00 - Geocache Treasure Hunt starts - 15 caches will be set up around the scout camp property ranging from easy to find to possibly hard to find. The last cache will be a multi-cache, using the clues found in the other caches. Groups of up to 5 will be formed so that experiences geocachers with go out with the unexperienced
~17:00 - Prize Presentation and Supper
~21:00 - Enjoy the Campfire. If the Fire Ban is still in affect, there will be no fire but we will still have fun anyway
UPDATE - MAY 23, 2007
Only 3 days to the event. The plans are going well. The weather looks like it will be great - not too hot - not too cold. 17 caches have been placed on the 1st Marathon Scout Camp property - 14 single stage caches and one 3 stage to the final cache. Points will be awarded to the numbers of cache found and the FTF the final cache. Come on out to share your geocaching experiences and have some fun. I have deposited 9 TB's and geocoins for the event. I will be placing 1 or 2 more before the event.
Thanks to everyone who have noted for a good event.
Please ensure that you sign up before the event so that we can plan for meals, etc.
