Geocache Description:

Man in Dark

City Art Science-fiction Puzzle Nano Cache

Recently I was riding in the metro line 5 in the direction Hermann-Debroux. The metro was half full with the usual business people around that time of the day. However, one of them seemed a bit different although I could not tell why. He was wearing an ordinary black suit and black sunglasses. This was a bit strange to wear sunglasses in the underground. He was reading one of these free magazines and seemed busy with his PDA (or was it already a tablet?). I guess it was his PDA that attracted my attention. It was different from any I had seen so far. Its screen was much brighter and seemed to be of high resolution. Strange, I could not recognize neither the operating system nor the letters on the screen. It seemed to be of a language I had never seen before.

We reached the metro station Beaulieu and it just happened that we both had to leave. He left his magazine on the seat. As I am a very environmental conscious person, I took it to throw it into a waste bin. The stranger did not take the exit most of the people take but used the one at the front of the train. I was curious, took the other exit and quickly ran back to the Metro building to see what the stranger was doing. I found him sitting on one of the benches again working on his PDA. I had the impression that he was doing some kind of inventory. He seemed to look at things like at the structures located at the edges of both sides of the space in front of the metro station. Then he drew 2 of these structures back to back on his PDA putting it on a list.

I was hidden by the corner of the building so he could not see me watching him. I had forgotten to throw away the magazine and was glancing at it while, every now and then, looking at the stranger. But again it seemed that this was not an ordinary magazine. I have attached a copy of it (Annex A) so that you will believe me. It seemed that this magazine had some generic parts and the rest were some kind of work sheets related to an inventory. So my initial observations seemed somehow correct.
I was curious and just for fun did what the stranger was doing: I put the symbol he had drawn in the first row, second column as there was no other empty field.

When looking up from the paper, I realised that the stranger had left his place and was walking towards the Metro building. Luckily, he went around the other side and did not see me. I turned around with the papers in my hands and saw him standing next to the road looking at the sculpture between the lanes. I put the papers into my bag and walked casually towards him pretending that I was heading towards the little bus station on the bridge. Standing close to the information display (and close to him) I could hear some of his low voiced words, it seemed he was making comments on his work. He said something about aliens and their items all over the place. That there are so many and that it is difficult to keep track of all of them and to ensure that none of them went missing.
He was quite busy so he did not notice that I had turned around and was looking over his shoulder noticing everything on the screen of his PDA.
He scanned the sculpture and wrote 3 letters in his PDA (Annex B). It looked as if these represented the name of the sculpture. I realised that the first letter was the same as the one I had just noted down before. I wrote the English name next to the alien characters hoping that in the end I would be able to decipher the strange language.

He turned around and walked towards the street crossing to his left while drawing the shape of one of the symbols (yellow triangle at the bottom with a blue circular top and a white sign in it) that should have been placed on the street there. When looking up he noticed that the item was not there. He seemed to be upset and noted that it had gone missing. Anyway, I put the same symbol in the 2nd row first column of the inventory sheet.

When the light was green he directly crossed the street towards the hemispheric shaped building. I thought this stranger could have been run over by a car by not orderly crossing the street.
I still had heard him saying something about a parabolic antenna station.

I could not follow him as the lights for pedestrians were red and it took me some time to cross the street in an orderly manner. In the meantime, I could watch him at the stairs leading up to the building. He took note of the symbol on display there. He walked then down hill and I was finally rushing to the place where he had been standing. When I put the symbol in the third row (obviously first column) I was wondering why one of our favourite food items was similar to an alien symbol.

Then I found the stranger looking for another sign a bit after the exit of the building and after the glass recycling containers stationed there. He seemed to be very upset (or got upset even more - this is difficult to tell with aliens) and uttered something like 'yet another one gone missing'. He marked the nearby light-carrier with the missing symbol. I found it twice there and knew by now how things work and put it in the 4th row first column of the table. He was shaking his head and made some notes in his PDA about this missing item too.

I just could see the stranger taking the stairs a few meters further down the road before I lost sight of him. Running down the street and the stairs I saw him standing at the bottom of the stairs looking at a waste bin. It seems he was taking note of the model number of the item (visible at 3 different places). Walking down the stairs I heard him saying what a good and efficient idea it was to reutilise worn out alien space-pods as waste baskets. As I had passed already a number of these I was wondering how many alien items might there be placed in our area. I put the symbol on the waste bin in the 5th row first column.

The man with the black suit did not seem to take notice of me and was casually walking down the road making positive remarks about the architecture and color of one of the houses on the left. Parts of the house nearly matched the color of his suit (i.e. brown instead of dark) and I heard him say something like spaceship parking. He counted the number of small (square sized) windows of that part of the house that was not surrounded by his favourite color. I put the number in the 6th row in the 3rd column of the table.

I started to feel a bit frightened by so many strange elements in our life. While walking further downhill I saw the stranger entering the park. In the middle of the park, I was still walking a bit behind him, I saw him connecting his PDA to a green box on the ground. It seems as if he was recharging his device. Obviously there was a symbol on the item again that I placed in the 7th row in the 2nd column.

Then he turned right and walked along the little creek. I had to keep a larger distance to him now, but it seemed to me as if he was singing a song or something like that. It was obvious that he was enjoying the walk. It seemed to me that he was giving particular attention to the nature, especially to flowers around him. He seemed quite passionate about this. After the little lake, just when the first houses appeared, he looked up to the roof of the first one on his left. There I could spot a dark animal figure. The man in black noted in his PDA what kind of animal this was (see Annex C).

He then continued walking until arriving at the street where he turned left and followed the little street until he turned again left and continued walking uphill.
Soon he arrived at an area covered with grass. He was immediately attracted by the (guess what) dark statue that is placed there. He noted the name of the animal that is part of this ensemble (see Annex D).

He took the paved way upwards to the left, crossed the street and walked alongside the church walls towards its tower. When I finally had arrived at the side of the church I got frightened by the symbols on display there. Should these have been my predecessors who had followed a man in dark before? I was really afraid that the stranger might have other intentions than just looking after alien artefacts. I nearly shouted out loud when I noticed that he took note of an alien symbol at the very bottom of the round instrument high up on the tower. He placed the symbol in the 8th row and second column of his table. Obviously I had seen this symbol already many thousand times before but never suspected that it would be of an extraterrestrial nature. This clearly seemed to become a very interesting inventory tour.

[Remark: This is a good opportunity for having a break at a nearby square. You might find there mountaineers recalling their recent climbing adventures. Or just ordinary people discussing lottery related subjects.]

The stranger in black continued walking on the path that leads away from the church and goes slightly uphill. At the street he quickly crossed it and continued walking uphill.
I was still looking puzzled back at the church trying to make sense out of what I had just observed.
When I continued uphill myself, I realised that the stranger with the dark suit was already at a house on the other side of the street. The number of the house had twice the same digit. He was looking up the house and took note of the alien symbol that was encompassing the two windows there. I noted it too in the 9th row in the first column.

Happy with his accomplishment the stranger kept walking uphill, but returned back to my side of the street. I had to wait a bit to let him gain some more distance between us. He stopped at the large red building – actually at its grey entrance with the number 26. He seemed to count something there on the grey walls of the entrance portal. When I arrived there I quickly spotted the same symbols here on the grey walls as near the metro station earlier on. It seems he had noted the total number of symbols in the 10th row in the 3rd column.

Then he raised his attention again upwards and inspected the little tower that features this house. There, at the top of it, he took note of a dark structure. He wrote the name of these common plant features in his PDA (see Annex E).

I heard him saying that the people in this street must be very happy ones as they are all displaying these colourful papers in many of their windows.

On the other side of the street at number 97 he took note of the alien symbol on display there at the top of the house. He put it in the 11th row 1st column.
He looked at a similar feature there on the street as the one that had gone missing at the beginning of this inventory tour. He was shaking his head and said something like that the humans have cloned the alien items without noticing their origin. He mumbled something about unresolved IPR issues.

Then we kept walking along the street for a while until the next crossing where he turned left. The reason for this became obvious when I noticed a bit later the large dark fence shortly after the turn. There at the turn he noticed yet another ensemble of (now) invisible alien symbols used for directing the traffic. I was starting to wonder why (invisible) alien symbols would be used to direct the traffic of humans? Then I realised that the use of (invisible) alien symbols might be the reason for the kind of traffic we have in Brussels ...
Continuing straight he noticed the dark symbols above the windows of house number 94. He wrote them again into his PDA (see Annex E). They were of the same kind as the ones before on the tower.

This seemed to be a very “busy” street as he wanted to take note of an alien symbol that should have been on display near the entrance of house number 185. He shouted out loud in anger when he realised that this symbol had gone missing from its proper place. Obviously it should have gone into the 12th row, 1st column. (Remark: Luckily I could verify "later" the shape of this symbol and thus I could guess what he had put into this field in the table. You can still today see this symbol on StreetView - the aliens control this service too it seems.)

Shortly later at number 114 the alien symbol there was not only at the door but nearly all over the place. It got placed in the 13th row 2nd column.

Arriving at the roundabout he noted with satisfaction that there had been new trees planted. Then he took the first street on his right that was going downhill and soon had discovered a dark statue there too. He counted the number of dark birds on display there and put it in his PDA in the 14th row 3rd column.

Returning back to the roundabout he wrote the altitude of this place in his PDA in the 15th row 3rd column.

Then he quickly headed to the statue of a biologist who seemed to be an ancient friend of him. After that he looked up and happily noticed a dark street sign pointing to his right.
I could hear him saying that the name there was the name of the area the aliens initially had settled down (see Annex F).

Cité Logis

He went down the street the arrow was pointing to. At the house number 46 he noted again some dark birds and put their number in his PDA. It was clear now to me where to place it in the inventory sheet.

He continued walking downhill and made some historic comments about the nice dark houses here and their impact on the life of Brussels. At the intersection of several streets he sat down on the bench and wanted to note the last two letters of the dark plant on the sign above him. He wanted to put their alien equivalents in the second column in rows 17 and 18. To his anger he had to report another lost item. [Luckily he will find it back some 340 m further on his route.]

He then took the road the arrow was pointing to along the oval shaped site. He said something about a particle accelerator being hidden there creating a lot of noise in evenings and during weekends and that this was nicely concealed by the people doing sports there.
A bit further down the road he scanned a dark statue that was sitting there. He noted the difference between the two dates in row 19 column 3.

I followed him then further down the street that was turning to the right shortly afterwards.
Arriving at the large elongated roundabout he spotted the missing sign with the dark plant on it. He immediately walked up to the big dark bird sculpture. I heard him saying that this was the place where it all started. What was he referring to?
He noted in row 20 column 3 the number of sound devices installed on top of a nearby house.

Then he continued straight on downhill.
At number 244 he greeted the girl in dark sitting there and kept walking downhill. At the end of the street he marched straight to the dark object (similar to a vase) placed there. It seemed to me that he noted the model number of this reused spaceship escape pod (that is what I heard him calling it) in row 21 2nd column.

Then he walked into the center of the place enjoying being under the trees there. What then happened was really amazing and keeps me still puzzled: he pointed his PDA towards the large building on is right and the PDA was emitting some kind of very intensive light beam. Soon the whole building was covered in that light and started to become transparent. Only the three white vertical sections seem to take a different shape and suddenly I could clearly see three rocket type space ships being concealed there inside the large building (that was fully transparent by now). The man in dark nodded satisfied and ticked something off in his PDA, the beam stopped, the building re-emerged and everything looked as normal as before. I could not belief what I had just witnessed.

There was not much time to start even thinking about this, as the stranger moved on again passing another space-pod of the same type. Strange that he did not note this one, but maybe it was included already in the previous note in the inventory sheet. He crossed the street and turned left walking towards the bus station. However, shortly before arriving there he took the small paved way on his right and walked the stairs downhill being delighted by the large number of dark trees on his left side.
At the end of the path, at the roundabout, he turned right happy to see a tree planted in the middle of it.
On the second house to his right (number 5) he checked the number of now white (previously dark) alien symbols of the same kind on the wall there (some of them seem to be rotated). He put their total number in row 22 column 3.

Reaching the end of the street he turned left and continued towards the next roundabout down the street. There he sat down on the bench and started to complain bitterly:

  • About the beautiful tree that was once there in the middle of the roundabout;
  • About the fact that humans had put a sculpture there that easily could be mistaken as an alien one - but this sculpture was definitely not one of theirs.
Looking through the blue sculpture he checked out the 3 metallic frames at the entrance of the building on the other side. He noted the name (that also says something about the function of it) in his PDA (see Annex G).

Satisfied with having completed his inventory tour the stranger headed now along the big spiky building uphill. I heard him saying something about new headquarters and Swedish design.

After that long walk with the man in dark I felt quite comfortable, despite the strange things that had happened and the distance between us has shortened considerably. So I was not at all alarmed when the stranger turned around towards me with a smile in his face and the PDA in his hand. Still I was looking at him with eyes widen open (and I guess my mouth must have dropped open too). He said something – still smiling - about some Entire Cosmos Regulations (EC Regulations) 239 and 240 that prohibit humans to discover the dimension barrier.
Having said that in a very friendly voice his PDA emitted some kind of flash that blinded me for a second. When I could see properly again the stranger had disappeared and I could not remember anything that had happened before. Still I had the feeling that something strange had happened and suddenly realised that I had this pack of papers in my hand. Somehow it downed on me that there was something very important hidden in these papers.
However, when I looked at them most of the pages had turned blank. But, interestingly my notes – I could clearly recognise my own handwriting – were still there but in some kind of converted form and in a different language.
So I was standing there completely puzzled like being woken up in the middle of the night trying to reassemble my thoughts when I noticed all these people, most of them in dark suits. Somehow I remembered that there was something strange about people dressed in dark. I got very frightened and ran quickly away - back to the metro station as I still remembered that I had arrived by metro.

Back at home I studied my strange notes and tried to make sense out of them. Finally at the next weekend I returned back to the metro station Beaulieu. I understood now a bit (at least) of what had happened there last time as bits and pieces of my memories had returned. I wanted to have final assurance by finding the dimension barrier. Luckily on weekends there are no persons in dark around in this street and I could search without being noticed by anybody. Imagine that a person in dark would notice me there and would flash me with this PDA again - I might get completely gaga!

This concludes the (vague) record of what I remembered from this strange encounter.
I have attached copies of my orignal notes so that you can see for yourself and find out what is there at the dimension barrier to be discovered.
Now it is up to you to believe me or not.
