A short walking tour of Clarkesville, Ga., that results in a regular cache. Terrain is slightly hilly, but nothing major. Cache is a lock-and-lock box. Once you get the final coordinates, you'll have to drive to the final, which is just outside city limits on county property. Please help keep it hidden by returning it just as you found it.
Clarkesville, Off the Square
If you like antiquing, shopping,dining, etc., feel free to visit stores ON the Square. This walking tour takes you a little bit away from the Square to some historical sites in Clarkesville. The total walk is about 8/10 of a mile and you'll see four historical locations. Then, there's an approximate 2-mile drive to the final cache site.
There's a little bit of math to be done from clues you'll find, but nothing mind-boggling--just number-plugging. The cache's purpose is to provide a good opportunity to take a nice walk, get some fresh air, and see sites you might otherwise not see.
First, suggested parking to begin the tour is at N 34 36.939, W083 31.500, but other parking is available.
After you park, it's a short stroll to the beginning waypoints. If it's springtime, there should be a lot of beautiful flowers for you to enjoy.
The first stop is a 19th century cottage that now is used by the City of Clarkesville. There are also a couple of other historic buildings on the property. At the coordinates, you should see a sign. You'll need the year the house was built. The first digit of the year = A; 2nd digit = B; and A+B = X.
Plug those numbers in to get the coordinates for your next stop: N 34 36.X6X, W083 3A.4A2. When you get to those waypoints, you'll see another historic building, the oldest of its kind in Clarkesville. There's a historical marker in the corner of the yard. It's not exactly hidden by trees, but you may have to look for it.
Here's what you want: the third digit of the year Gallagher succeeded = A; the number of wardens = B; and the first digit of the amount of money the piece of property sold for = C.
So to find your next destination, plug those numbers in here: N 34 36.BB8, W083 3C.A26. This will lead you to a peaceful place, but please be very respectful. Here you will find many veterans and soldiers. The one you're looking for has the initials W.W.N. You shouldn't have to look hard--hopefully the coordinates will take you right to it.
Add the two years on the marker together to get a 4-digit number. That number is ABCD. Then E = A+D.
Plug those numbers in here to get the coordinates for your next destination: N34 36.BE6, W083 31.A14.
You'll pass another historical building on your way, to stop and admire if you like. We didn't include it because we didn't want the tour to be too lengthy, plus it's undergoing renovation.
This takes you to the final stop on the walking tour, but you have one more set of coordinates to get to get to the final cache.
At this location you'll see another historical marker, almost hidden by trees (but the numbers you need aren't hidden). ABCD = the year the building was built. X=D-C; Y=A+B
The coordinates to the final cache are: N 34 36.X80, W083 30.X85.
This location is about 2 miles away, so we recommend driving. (Recommended parking for the final is at N 34 36.AYA, W083 30.AY6.)
The cache is in Clarkesville, but is on county property, and is a place where a lot of people have fun doing different things. Watch for muggles doing those things and be stealthy.
