The derelict village of Pollphail.
The buildings have now been demolished.
Portavadie, where the world’s largest man-made hole was dug at a cost of £14 million or £4 million, depending on report chosen, for oil rig construction orders which never materialised.
Once a tiny fishing village, Portavadie was a victim of the oil boom of the 1970s, when the site was earmarked for building North Sea rigs. Sadly it was only after the construction site was built that the authorities realised that tides in Loch Fyne were too treacherous to risk floating the massive structures out to sea. Despite promises to reinstate the site to its original condition the area has been left to decay. Several attempts to create timeshares from the buildings have been initiated, but all have failed to attract sponsors. A proposal reviewed in 2006 projects a village which could rival Tighnabruaich in size, with a marina for up to 250 vessels.
Please note the buildings are derelict and therfore dangerous I do not advise anyone enters them.

If you have followed the route as mentioned above and have parked your car at the entrance to the private farm road you now have two options. Firstly, you can head cross country for 10 minutes or so to Columba’s Chapel and pick up the track there. Secondly, You can head down past Pollphail village and pick up the main road back to the car approximately 20 minutes.
