This cache has been archived.

Jak&Harry: This cache has been made very difficult to get to due to blocking of footpaths and it appears to have been trashed so I will have to archive it.

Geocache Description:

This cache is dedicated to the men an women stationed at the former RAF Blakehill Farm airfield.

Few will realise today that just outside Cricklade there is a former RAF airfield where 2500 aircrew were stationed and which played an important part in D Day and the battle of Arnhem, made famous in the film a Bridge to Far.

During the Second World War there were more than 500 structures including aircraft hangars, barrack blocks and medical centres on the site and in the surrounding area.
In more recent times RAF Blakehill Farm was used by GCHQ as a radio listening station.

The former airfield is now a peaceful wildlife trust which is open to the public and well worth a visit.

This cache is not hidden at the airfield, but at the derelict farm from which it is believed the airfield takes it name. The cache is close to the edge of a public footpath which skirts the old farm. Please do not enter the derelict building which is in a dangerous condition. It can get muddy.

Parking is at the bottom of Purton Stoke village just before the private road. I will add the Co-ords.once I have re-checked them.

For more information visit the Cricklade museum which is open on Saturday mornings. There are a number of books available from the museum which make interesting reading about the airfield and the impact that 2500 aircrew had on Cricklade.

You may need stout gloves for this one in the summer.
