Geocache Description:

This cache is located close to the disused RAF Down Ampney airfield, which is now in private ownership so please stick to the footpaths which skirt the airfield.

The quite village of Down Ampney is the birthplace of composer Ralph Vaughan Williams. The village was also host to RAF Down Ampney during WW2.

RAF Down Ampney was one of a group of three airfields, Broadwell, Blakehill Farm and Down Ampney which came under 46 Group, Transport Command. Their main task was setting up Transport Squadrons for the invasion of Normandy. The first aircraft to take-off for the invasion of Europe left Down Ampney at 22.30hrs 5th June 1944. They also brought back causalities to the first aid hospital set up at Down Ampney.

The airfield played a major part in operation "Market Garden" in September 1944 when 10,000 troops from the 1st Airborne Division were dropped at Arnhem.

RAF Down Ampney was finally abandoned in 1947 and returned to agricultural land.
