For the Hounds Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Christopher Pike: Hi,

A recent sweep of problem caches in the area has revealed that this cache is inside the Curlew Lake Game Production Area.

In early 2008, the South Dakota Game, Fish, and Parks Department banned geocaches in all Game Production Areas. Because of that I cannot list or allow caches in those areas anymore. Because this cache cannot be listed in its current location, I have to archive the cache.

Thanks,

Christopher Pike

Geocache Description:

This cache is designed for all the hounds out there, rockhounds, cachehounds, fishhounds and adventurehounds all will enjoy this one.

Curlew Lake is a State maintained recreation area a few miles north of New Underwood, SD. While mainly known as a good spot to catch a few panfish, the area also a great place to hunt for precious stones or at least some good looking ones. This is also a great place to let the dog run around and take a swim in the lake. Everywhere you look there are different varieties of rocks, so keep an eye out for agates and the like. My kids seem to favor the leaverite variety if to know what I mean. I stocked this cache with several mineral specimens, including quartz, pyrite, serpentine, agate, tourmaline, mica, a small geode, coral and garnets along with several others my untrained eye can't name. There's also toy items and stuff for the kids. The cache is an ammo can well hidden away from the water and away from inquisitive eyes.
Curlew is located along well maintained roads and is accessable year-round. Easiest route is from New Underwood to the South, though the preferred route is via Elk Creek Rd. from the West. The scenery is outstanding. Along the way keep an eye out for historic homesteads, a one-room schoolhouse, de-commisioned missle silo, an old cemetary, a couple oddly placed rail cars and views for miles. Sometimes gravel is the best way to travel! I will place additional coodinates for intersections but remember to look for the public access signs and you'll find this one with ease.
