Cache is a pill bottle in full camo right next to the trail.
Sing with me! “Happiness is a warm shotgun, gobble, gobble, shoot, shoot! Happiness is a warm shotgun, gobble, gobble, shoot, shoot!” I have nothing against hunters or guns, but the story with this cache goes like this:
Two days ago, after placing Shoreline #4, I met up with a turkey hunter at the trailhead. He asked me if I’d seen any, and he wanted to be sure he could hunt for wild turkey in the Auburn Recreation Area. I told him that as far as I knew it wasn’t allowed, with all the hikers, bikers and equestrians on the trails, and that in all my time I’d never heard a single shot. He agreed that it seemed unlikely, but he did show me an article in a magazine that said the area was open during certain seasons for certain fowl. He then left for another area he was sure of, and said he was going to call to find out.
I didn’t think much of it until today when two of the5Bucks and I met another hunter here in Cronan Ranch. He was complete with two decoys, but said he didn’t see any turkeys in the park area and was unwilling to shoot “over the fence into private property.” Seemed like a law-abiding guy, but the three of us were amazed that hunting would be allowed in such a high-use area. Later on we heard one shot somewhere else in the park.
At the end of the day we read the sign, and sure enough, during certain seasons, hunting is allowed! No target shooting, or cachers shooting though, thank goodness. So from now on, watch your back. And you may want to wear day-glo orange on your next visit.
The cache is located near where we saw the hunter from the parking lot. His orange decoy bag gave him away!
