Geocache Description:

There are caches that bring you to scenic vistas, beautiful parks, and historic landmarks. This cache is none of those.

This area is trashed - and it has been building up for decades. One trip here, I found an oil can of a brand that stopped being sold before I was born. The last time we were here, we found a glass Listerine bottle with the old XXX on it. But that's just the old stuff - let's not overlook the fast food bags, candy wrappers and beer cans. But there is an underlying beauty here. And some history. I know it. I'm not really sure WHAT the history of the area is, but i've been trying to piece it together. This land is State owned and close to, but not quite part of the American Legion State Forest. The Morgan Brook rushes through here, creating some interesting little islands. I can guess from the signs (and the tell-tale trash) that this is a pretty popular fishing spot. In some areas, you can see the trees coming up through broken bits of pavement, so I have come to assume that this was part of the old Route 44 before the big floods of '55. (Maybe some of this trash was deposited here during those floods?) There is another spot near the brook with a small foundation, which might have been a shed. There are metal fragments in it of what look to be some sort of cart or buggy. Further up is an old rock wall, in good shape, and beyond that are the charred ruins of (from what I've been told) a tragic house fire in the 1990's. There is trash everywhere. It's ugly. The old trash is interesting, the new trash is sad. But trash is trash, so I encourage anyone to bring a bag, even the smallest bit of CITO would help here. Some more adventurous types might bring along a metal detector and find treasure! I'll say now that I don't think this is a child friendly area. Also, DEET will be your friend if you don't want to pick up hitchhikers. Parking is a bit tricky, but there are a few spots with plenty of room to pull over on Rt. 44, and spots at the bottom of Rt. 318 - you may have to do a drive-by first to pick your spots, depending on how much traffic there is. Look for yellow reflectors where the guardrails end. You're looking for an ammo can.
